In a bid to boost tourism, the Queensland Government is set to introduce a new system that allows motorists to upload their own licence plate on to their cars.
The new system will allow motorists to be seen by other drivers and the Queensland Transport Authority (QTA) will be able to see who has uploaded their plate.
Read more”The system is part of a wider effort to make it easier for motorists to use public transport and get around, but it is also an important way of getting more Queenslanders out to the beaches, where they are more likely to spot their neighbours and see their local artworks,” QTA said.
The system will also see Queenslanders able to upload photos of themselves with their license plate, in addition to the current requirement of uploading a photograph of themselves on their driver’s licence or driving licence.
Currently, motorists are required to upload a photo of themselves at a point of public interest, or at a specified time of the day.
“In some cases, this could be a location, or a street, or even a vehicle,” QDA Chief Executive Rob Waddell said.
“There is a risk that some drivers will upload images that are inappropriate or that they will upload an image of a vehicle that is not a public safety hazard.”
“We’ve seen some drivers uploading pictures that are a bit too close to their neighbours, and we’ve seen a number of people upload images of themselves that are too far away,” he said.
“So it is important that they don’t be seen.”
While the Queensland government is keen to boost its tourism industry, the system will not be compulsory for Queenslanders, and drivers can opt to not have their plate listed on their car, or not upload a photograph at all.
For those that do want to be able do so, the photo of them uploaded will be used to determine the person’s licence plate number, rather than their actual license plate number.
QTA says it will also be introducing an option for drivers to choose to have their vehicle listed on public transport, and to use the QR Code instead of a picture of themselves.
In addition to a new license plate system, QTA is also looking at using the QR code on some of its new road signs. Read Next
